17) The Little Boy - Desperate Journey - The Beach House.

This is the highlight cue of the score, running in at over 5 minutes long and introducing a lot of new material which manages to both link back to previous music while also follow the narrative flow in a stylish and clever manner.

The music opens with an anguished theremin motif that continues into a repeated descending 4 note theme on solo cello, continuing with added choir, accompanied by a perpetual Shelly Manne (The Man With the Golden Arm) style ride cymbal figure. The music conveys a sense of desperation as Alek struggles to walk along the rocky beach as he fights to keep his sense of self. A little boy appears and we hear subtle hints of London Bridge alongside the continued sense of desperation. A cool Hammond Organ and Celeste join in and there is a nice use of Chopsticks over organ glissandos interspersed with playful pizzicato strings. The theremin and organ are utilised once more, before a new, jazzy motif appears played on brass and sax, over a pounding percussion. There is a feeling of desperaton in the music as Alex staggers towards the Beach House. On reaching it, we see an anxious, waiting, Carol and the music now switches to the solo cello, mellow cocktail piano and hammond organ sounds of 4) I Love You. There is some clever use of bass and guitar harmonics over bongo rolls (as the scene cuts back to a nicely composed shot of Alek staggering along the beach) before another jazz motif appears, interspersed with punchy brass stabs, piano riffs and hammond organ tremolo effects (a real goosebump moment in the cue incidentally). A desperate cry is heard on saxophone as Carol realises she is trapped in the Beach House, while hearing the primeval cries of Alex outside. The music reaches a satisfying conclusion with more brass stabs and a cool Nelson Riddle style riff, followed by a sophisticated piano run, as Carol runs in desperation towards the phone. A superb, multi-layered cue!
